In October 2017, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced that North Tonawanda was a recipient of $2.5 million as part of the $20 million Smart Growth Community Fund Buffalo Billion II initiative. North Tonawanda, as well as the other municipalities that received $2.5 million each-the City of Dunkirk, City of Lackawanna and Village of Gowanda-are focusing on projects that utilize existing infrastructure to support placemaking, walkable communities and sustainable development. Funding awards were recommended and approved by the Western New York Regional Economic Development Council (WNYREDC).
The City of North Tonawanda has undertaken the MomeNTum Downtown Placemaking Plan that will leverage the Smart Growth Community Funds to foster economic prosperity by promoting walkability, vibrancy, urban development, and local sense of place and quality of life. As part of this plan, and in order to ensure that the local community is given a voice in the planning process, the Project Team, led by Joy Kuebler Landscape Architect, PC, is extending an open invitation to community members and leaders, residents, business owners, and stakeholders to attend a series of Public Workshops and Walking Tours of key areas throughout downtown NT.
The first tour will focus on the Webster Street, in particular the traffic triangle, also known as Charlie Fleishman Park. This tour will take place on Monday, April, 30th from 5:00 pm -7:00 pm and will meet in the Manhattan Street municipal parking lot.
The second tour, which had been postponed due to weather concerns, will take place on Thursday, May 10th from 10:00 am – noon and will meet in the Rainbow Roller Rink parking lot. This tour will focus on potential Neighborhood Gateways at the intersections of Oliver and Goundry Streets and Oliver and Thompson Streets.
The third tour will also take place on Thursday, May 10th from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm and will meet in the Manhattan Street municipal parking lot, with a focus on potential Feature Gateways at the intersections of River Road and Goundry Street and River Road and Thompson Street.
